Virginia Indians occupied the grounds of Camden Farm from 1650 until 1690, and many well-preserved artifacts from that time period have been recovered on the property, including the pipe pictured above. With the help of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and Virginia Outdoors Foundation, The Conservation Fund facilitated a conservation easement on the portion of Camden Farm that contains the archaeological site. The easement represents the country’s first example of the Department of Defense and a state historic preservation office working together to offset impacts to cultural resources on a military installation through conservation of resources outside the installation.
