Rocky Fork lies within Cherokee National Forest and abuts the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. In August 2009, the U.S. Forest Service acquired 1,280 acres of the Rocky Fork property from The Conservation Fund. The U.S. Forest Service plans to purchase additional acreage as federal funding is secured. In addition, the State of Tennessee is expected to acquire a portion of Rocky Fork as funds become available.
